Climatic Regions of Africa.

Africa climatically can be divided into seven regions:

Rain and clouds
Climatic Regions

  • (i) Rainy tropical
  • (ii)Wet and dry savanna (Low and High)
  • (iii) Tropical steppe
  • (iv) tropical desert
  • (v) Humid subtropical
  • (vi) Mediterranean and
  • (vii) Undifferentiated highlands.

The most important of the above regions are

  • (i) Rainy tropical: This climatic region includes the equatorial area from Guinea coast of Nigeria to the East African highlands, some portion of West Africa, (Dahomey to Siberia and Sierra Leone) Coastal east Africa and eastern Madagascar. It is hot rainy and humid climatic region. Annual rainfall here is more than 60 inches and it is mostly convectional in nature. Cameroon has recorded 400 inches rainfall in one single year.

  • (ii) Wet and Dry Savanna (low and High): While low savanna climate occurs over vast regions which are north south and east of tropical climate, wet and dry savanna climate occurs in the interior with elevation more than 300 feet. There are wet summers and dry winters in low savanna, but in high savanna precipitation is less. Temperatures in low savanna are 100° F during the daytime and in the high savanna temperatures are 80° to 90°F. Trees are found in the wetter parts and grasses in dry parts. Elephants, Giraffe, Zebra, Lion, hyena, Cheetah and Leopards are found here.
  • (iii) Tropical steppe: Tropical steppe stretches both north and south of the Equator. The north steppe stretches across Africa in a belt, which is 3000 miles long and about 300 miles in width. In this climate dry season is long and rains are less ranging from 15 to 30 inches annually. Short grasses grow here.
