African vegetation
Fauna and Flora

It has been aptly said that in Africa the vegetation shows that all seasonal change depends on rainfall; and not only do the rainfall belts correspond closely to the Natural Vegetation Zones, but these also correspond to the Major Natural Regions.

  • (1) The Equatorial (or Tropical) Forests, with their uniformly high temperatures and heavy rainfall, cover much of the Congo Basin and the coast lands bordering the Gulf of Guinea. The Equatorial forest is typical of the equatorial zone. Tropical rain forest occurs on the windward slopes of Madagascar and along the Wet Tropical coastal area, which extends from the Republic of Guinea to S.W. Ghana. Rain forests cover much less than 10% of the total area.

Some animals, like the chimpanzee, are mainly tree-dwellers; others, such as the hippopotamus hunt the rivers, while the elephant is found in the more open forest margins.

  • (2) Savanna lands of Africa are considerably more extensive than the rain forest and may extend over about 40% of the total area. Savanna types range from high wet savanna on one hand to dry savanna on the other. Wooded savanna in moist areas is characterized by dose growth of trees, gallery of forest along watercourses and clumps of forest within the savanna areas. The grasses of wooded savanna are in general coarse and the growth is rapid after the onset of the rains. The dry savanna grasses are much shorter, generally between 1-2 m in height. Savanna grasses are not palatable to stock. These are described as African 'bush'.
