Crops
Commercial Crops of the Savanna. Tree crops include gum arabic and Shea nuts while cultivated crop are groundnuts, maize and millet. Gum arabic in the Sudan Republic, Shea butter in Sudan zone extending chiefly to the western part in Sengal and eastern Sudan Republic are important in local economy.
Cotton is grown with irrigation particularly in the Sudan Republic. Egyptian variety in irrigated Gozira plains, south of Khartoum between the Blue and White Niles are cultivated. Cotton is a leading export from Uganda. It is increasing in Tanzania and the Savanna area in Zaire.
Groundnuts are important in Senegal, the Gambia, northern Nigeria, the Niger Republic and to a lesser extent in upper Volta and in northern Zaire. Tobacco is widely grown in Sudan zone, in Savanna country of Zaire Madagascar, Malawi, Rhodesia and the Republic of South Africa. Cultivation is increased in Algeria and in Tanzania. Dates, Vegetables and cereals are grown, as oasis products. The zone stretching from southern Morocco through central Algeria to central Tunisia is an important date-producing region.
The other areas are Egypt, Nile valley and quarter of the Sudan Republic.
Mediterranean Crops thrive in Barbary states (particularly in central Tunisia). Citrus and other fruits in Barbary states and the Cape region, vine in Barbary states and near the Cape, are important. South African Wine is increasing in popularity while Algeria is an important wine exporter. Citrus fruits are grown in the Transval, Natal and Rhodesia, (non-Mediterranean lands). Wheat and barley are grown in Barbary states and at the cape. The Atlas lands are important exporters. Wheat is also grown in Non-Mediterranean lands like Rhodesia, Kenya and parts of Sudan zone and Egypt. The Mediterranean region and Egypt are the largest producers.
