Livestock Animals and Animal Product. Livestock rearing is not well developed. The widespread nature of animal diseases, shortage of fodder and lack of natural pastures are the main reason for this condition.

The more important stock rearing regions are

  • (1) North Africa and the Nile flood plain. It is camel's cattle-sheep and goat regions, nomadic and semi nomadic type.



  • (2) The Sahara zone: South of Sahara proper with the adjacent lands of Sudan belt from the Atlantic coast to the Eastern Horn region - Southern Savanna lands suffers from testse fly. Cattle, sheep and goats are reared by nomadic and semi-nomadic inhabitants

  • (3) The eastern horn including Ethiopia: It is a very important region. Cattle, sheep and goats are reared on the high plateau.
  • (4) Central Africa plateau has fairly large cattle population but there are few sheep and goat. It is the region of large-scale ranching. Beef and dairy products are available for exports.
  • (5) South Africa: This has the largest sheep and second largest cattle population in the continent. Sheep are reared both in the drier west and in the moister east. Wool is the leading export from Republic.
