Capital and largest city of Nova Scotia, and Canada's main ice-free Atlantic port. Its strategic position made it an important wartime naval base. James Wolfe, the British general, sailed from here to capture Quebec in 1759, and in both World Wars Halifax was a gathering place for Atlantic convoys. The first transatlantic steamship service started between Halifax and Great Britain in 1840. Today the city is important for bulk cargoes and container traffic, and is an educational, cultural and industrial centre, with iron foundries, oil refineries and factories making soap and shoes.
