River, 160 km (100 miles) long, in Yukon Territory, flowing west to join the Yukon River at Dawson. It gave its name to the gold-producing region on Bonanza Creek (a tributary) where gold was discovered in 1896. In the next two years nearly 30 000 prospectors joined the gold rush, but by 1910 only 1000 were left as gold became more difficult to extract. Some mining went on until 1966.
