The mainland section of the province of Newfoundland, covering an area of 295 800 km2 (112 826 sq miles) and separated from the island part by the Strait of Belle Isle. It is a plateau area of the CANADIAN SHIELD and varies in height from 200 to 1000m (656 to 3280 ft). The north is tundra, the south is covered by coniferous forests, and mineral deposits include iron ore. Indians and Inuit (Eskimos) engaged in fishing and trapping live in small communities on the coast. Goose Bay airport and the mining towns of Labrador City and Wabush are inland.
