Most easterly of the Prairie Provinces, covering an area of 650 087 km2 (250 998 sq miles) with WINNIPEG as its capital. The first agricultural colony was established there by Scots in the province's RED RIVER Valley in 1812. Two-thirds of Manitoba lies in the CANADIAN SHIELD area, and one-sixth of its area is covered by lakes. The prairies produce grain crops, beef and dairy cattle. Minerals include oil, nickel, copper and zinc. Industries produce processed food, agricultural equipment, clothing and furniture. Many East Europeans have settled in the province. The largest group is from the UKRAINE, and a Ukrainian festival is held every year at Dauphin.
