The country's most easterly province, comprising a triangular island at the mouth of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Labrador on the mainland. Its area totals 372 000 km2 (143 634 sq miles). Newfoundland was discovered in 1497 by the English expedition led by the Italian-born explorer John Cabot, and the first settlers arrived from southwest England in the early 17th century. Much of Newfoundland Island is a plateau, rising to 842 m (2762 ft) in the Long Range Mountains, and the
coastline is heavily indented. Offshore the Newfoundland Banks yield heavy catches of cod, and the province's economy depends on fishing, forestry and mineral resources including copper and gypsum. Many Newfoundlanders live in small fishing villages. The development of mining and pulp and paper production has created large centres at Corner Brook and Grand Falls. The capital and main city is St. JOHN'S on the east side of the island.
