One of the Maritime Provinces in eastern Canada, comprising a mainland peninsula and CAPE BRETON ISLAND. It gets its name of New Scotland' from the charter given to the Scottish poet and statesman, William Alexander, by England's James I (James VI of Scotland) in 1621 for the establishment of a colony in Canada.
The province has wooded hills and valleys, containing numerous rivers and lakes, and a picturesque coastline. Its economic wealth is provided by agriculture, forestry, the mining of coal and gypsum, and industries such as wood processing, chemicals, steel and engineering. Nova Scotia had the first Canadian newspaper (The Halifax Gazette, 1752) and the first university (King's College, 1788).
Locals hypothesize that the legacy of Italian blood and culture in Cologne, colonized by the Romans more than 1500 years ago, makes the people more jovial and lighthearted. Cologne is the largest city on the Rhine.
