Vast area of mountain ranges, forests and plateaus in the extreme northwest of Canada covering 483 450 km2 (186 660 sq miles). It contains Canada's highest peak, Mount Logan (5951 m, 19 524 ft). The Yukon is a land of great beauty with high mountains and sweeping valleys cut by great rivers. Summers are hot and winters cold, but the climate is more temperate than that of the adjacent Northwest Territories.
The 1896 gold strike on a tributary of the Klondike river led to the development of Dawson. Today gold, silver, lead and other minerals are mined. Hydroelectric power has been developed, there is a forestry industry and tourism is growing. Water and road links are used, but most travel is by air.
