Alabama is a Southern state, which became part of the USA in 1819 after periods of French, English and Spanish rule.

It was a Confederate stronghold in the Civil War (1861-5) and was for long a centre of resistance to black civil rights. It was a cotton-growing state, but cotton is no longer a main crop and today the chief farm products are chickens, cattle, soya beans, peanuts and maize.

Coal is mined; it fuels the iron and steel industry in the city of Birmingham. Oil and natural gas are also produced. MONTGOMERY is capital of the state, which covers 133 667 km2 (51 609 sq miles).
