Los Angeles is a City in southern California, about 200 km (125 miles) from the Mexican border.

It is the centre of one of the largest urban areas in the world, which sprawls over much of southern California and contains more than 12 million people. Even the city and metropolitan area of Los Angeles proper have population figures second in the USA only to those of New York. However, it is almost entirely a city of suburbs, with no real centre. Taking a Los Angeles helicopter tour is the best way to grasp this enormous city.

The original settlement, founded in 1781, was near the present downtown business district by the Los Angeles River, some 24 km (15 miles) from the Pacific Ocean. As the city has prospered, it has grown beyond the surrounding hills, although it is still contained by the San Gabriel, San Bernardino and Santa Ana mountains, which help to trap the bane of the city -smog. Rich oil fields, film making centered on the suburb of Hollywood, the aircraft industry and tourism are the main livelihoods. It is a major port and has several universities.
