Colorado is a Western state covering 270 000 km2 (104 247 sq miles) between Wyoming to the north and New Mexico to the south.

The eastern plains average a height of 1500 m (4900 ft), but in the west there are the Rocky Mountains with some 1100 peaks above 3000 m (10 000 ft) and 50 higher than 4265 m (14 000 ft); the highest is Mount Elbert (4399 m, 14 431 ft). Cattle, wheat and maize are the main farm products, and oil, gas and coal the chief minerals, with some silver, lead and molybdenum (used in steel making).

The fine scenery and climate attracts tourists, and also immigrants and high-technology industries, and Colorado has one of the country's fastest-growing populations. Aspen is one of the USA's largest ski resorts. DENVER is the state capital, and at COLORADO SPRINGS is the headquarters of the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD).

Denver is the State capital of Colorado, standing at 1610 m (5280 ft) just east of the Rocky Mountain foothills, about 140 km (85 miles) south of the Wyoming border. It was founded during a gold rush in 1858. The city's manufactures include aircraft, chemicals and electronics, and it has the largest centre of federal government operations outside the national capital, Washington; they include the Mint.
