The eastern plains average a height of 1500 m (4900 ft), but in the west there are the Rocky Mountains with some 1100 peaks above 3000 m (10 000 ft) and 50 higher than 4265 m (14 000 ft); the highest is Mount Elbert (4399 m, 14 431 ft). Cattle, wheat and maize are the main farm products, and oil, gas and coal the chief minerals, with some silver, lead and molybdenum (used in steel making).

Denver is the State capital of Colorado, standing at 1610 m (5280 ft) just east of the Rocky Mountain foothills, about 140 km (85 miles) south of the Wyoming border. It was founded during a gold rush in 1858. The city's manufactures include aircraft, chemicals and electronics, and it has the largest centre of federal government operations outside the national capital, Washington; they include the Mint.
