Illinois is a Midwestern state bordered by the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, and in the northeast by Lake Michigan.

It covers 146 076 km2 (56 400 sq miles) and its gently undulating, fertile lowlands produce maize, soya beans, pigs and cattle. Coal is mined in the south and there is also some oil production. Manufacturing, whose main product is machinery, employs more than a million people. CHICAGO is the chief city and SPRINGFIELD the state capital.

1. Springfield is the State capital of Illinois, about 280 km (175 miles) southwest of Chicago in the middle of a rich agricultural and coal-mining area. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-65) lived in Springfield for many years and is buried there.

2. Springfield is also a City in Massachusetts, on the Connecticut River about 130 km (80 miles) west and slightly south of Boston. It was founded as a trading post in 1636 and was the site of a national arsenal from 1777 to 1968. Manufactures today include firearms, electrical equipment, plastics and chemicals. The game of basketball was invented there in 1891.
