Maine

Maine is the most northeasterly state, covering 86027 km2 (33 215 sq miles).

Most of it is mountainous, and it rises to 1605 m (5267 ft) at Mount Katahdin in the east. It has many lakes. Much of the state is given over to forestry. Farming (dairy produce, eggs and potatoes), fishing and tourism are also sources of income. AUGUSTA is the state capital and PORTLAND the largest city.

Augusta is also a City in the state of Georgia on the Savannah River, which forms the border with South Carolina. It was founded as a military base in 1736. Today it is a market and textile manufacturing centre and river port.
