Salem Massachusetts

Salem is a City in Massachusetts, about 20 km (12 miles) northeast of Boston.

It is one of the oldest settlements in the country, founded in 1626. The city became notorious after a series of witchcraft trials in 1692, which ended in the execution of 20 townsfolk, mostly women.

It later became a prosperous port, and today it is also an industrial centre and tourist resort.

Salem still has several 17th-century buildings, including the House of Seven Gables, immortalized in the novel of the same name by Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-64).
