State made up of two peninsulas on the Great Lakes: Lower Michigan, flanked by Lakes Huron and Michigan; and Upper Michigan, between Lakes Superior, Michigan and Huron.
The latter is more hilly, forested and less populated. The lower peninsula has some forest but is more fertile, and dairy produce, maize, beef, fruit and vegetables are the mainstays of farming. Iron ore, oil and gas are produced, and manufactures include cars and accessories - especially in and around DETROIT - machinery and processed foods. The state covers 150 780 km2 (58 216 sq miles) and the state capital is LANSING.

Lansing is the State capital of Michigan. It lies 130 km (80 miles) west and slightly north of Detroit, and is a car-making centre where, in 1887, one of the first American cars was built. Michigan State University is at East Lansing.
