New Mexico is a South-western state, on the Mexican border.

It was settled by the Spanish in the 16th century and was not ceded to the USA until 1848. It became a state in 1912. New Mexico covers 315 115 km2 (121 666 sq miles) and rises in the north and west to more than 3000 m (10 000 ft) in the Rocky Mountains and Colorado Plateau.





The state has one of the country's largest Indian populations. Farming is based on cattle, hay and wheat, while gas, oil and coal are the principal minerals. The state capital is SANTA FE and the largest city is ALBUQUERQUE.
