North Carolina is a State covering 136 198 km2 (52 586 sq miles) beside the Atlantic Ocean south of Virginia.

The land rises to the Appalachian Mountains, which reach 2037 m (6684 ft) at Mount Mitchell in the far west. Tobacco, chickens, soya beans, maize and peanuts are the main agricultural products, and phosphates are the chief mineral.

orth Carolina is the nation's leading producer of textiles and cigarettes, and also has electronics, engineering and chemicals industries. It was one of the original 13 states. RALEIGH is its capital and Charlotte the biggest city.

Raleigh is the State capital of North Carolina. It lies in the centre of the state, about 185 km (115 miles) from the Atlantic Ocean. The city was founded in 1792 and named in honor of the English adventurer Sir Walter Raleigh, who had helped open up the New World two centuries earlier. It stands in the heart of tobacco growing country.
