North Dakota is a Midwestern state on the Canadian border.

It covers 183 022 km2 (70 665 sq miles) and stretches westwards from the Red River to the high plains on the border of Montana. Agriculture is the main livelihood, producing wheat, beef, oats and barley; coal, oil and lignite are the chief minerals.





Originally the home of various Indian tribes, including the Sioux, it became a state in 1889. BISMARCK is the state capital.

Bismarck is the State capital of North Dakota, standing on the Missouri river 240 km (150 miles) south of the Canadian border. It is an agricultural processing and servicing centre.
