Ohio USA is a Northern industrial and farming state covering 106,765 km2 (41,222 sq miles) of gently undulating country southwards from Lake Erie to the Ohio River.
It was first settled in the 1780s and joined the Union in 1803. Ohio's prosperous farms produce soya beans, maize, dairy goods and beef. Coal, oil and gas are the main mining products and manufactures include machinery, transport equipment and steel. The largest cities are Cleveland, Cincinnati and the state capital Columbus.

Ohio is also a River used as a key route by settlers traveling to the Midwest. It is formed from the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers, which join at the city of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, and flows about 1575 km (980 miles) generally south-west to the Mississippi at Cairo. The Ohio forms the boundary between the states of Ohio, Indiana and Illinois to the north and West Virginia and Kentucky to the south.
