It rises to 3424 m (11 235 ft) at Mount Hood in the Cascade Range in the north-west. A trading post for furs was set up in 1811, but large-scale immigration by white settlers began in 1842 via the Oregon Trail.

This wagon route, some 3200 km (2000 miles) long, began at Independence in western Missouri and followed the Platte and North Platte rivers westwards, crossed the Rocky Mountains at South Pass, and then followed the Snake and Columbia rivers to Fort Vancouver (now the city of Vancouver, in Washington state, across the Columbia from Portland).
