Salem is the State capital of Oregon.

It situated on the Willamette River about 70 km (45 miles) south and slightly west of Portland.

Salem is the centre of a rich farming region, and has numerous food processing plants and a paper mill. It was founded in 1840 by Methodist missionaries, and has a university founded two years later.
