It was founded in the early 18th century as a trading post on the Susquehanna River. Nearby coal mines were the basis of its industries, which now produce machinery, aircraft parts and wood products.

In 1979 it was the scene of a near-disaster when a fault in the nearby Three Mile Island nuclear power plant caused a partial meltdown of a reactor's core.

Some radioactivity escaped but the accident reportedly caused no deaths.
