South Carolina is a Southeastern state covering 80 432 km2 (31 055 sq miles).

South Carolina is located between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, to the east of Georgia. It was first permanently settled in 1670 and was one of the original 13 states.





Agriculture concentrates on soya beans, tobacco and cattle, while the chief manufactures are textiles, chemicals and machinery. Tourism is the second largest money earner after textiles.





The state capital of South Carolina is Columbia and Charleston is the main port. Columbiais the State capital of South Carolina, about 170 km (105 miles) northwest of Charleston. It was burnt down in 1865 during the Civil War. Today it is a manufacturing and market centre and is the seat of the University of South Carolina.
