West Virginia USA is a State covering 62 629 km2 (24 181 sq miles) between the Allegheny Mountains and the upper Ohio River. Much of it is mountainous and farming is limited, cattle, chickens and apples being the main products. The state is the USA's leading producer of bituminous coal, and also produces oil and gas; these fuel its chemicals, metal processing and glass industries.

It was originally part of Virginia, but its people opposed slavery and remained loyal to the Union during the Civil War (1861-5); they broke away to form a separate state in 1863. Harpers Ferry National Monument at the junction of the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers in the northeast corner of the state commemorates John Brown's rising against slavery in 1859. CHARLESTON is the state capital.

Charleston USA is the State capital of West Virginia. It lies in the west of the state, about 50 km (30 miles) from the Ohio border, and was founded in 1794. The city is the centre of a coal and chemical producing region, and also manufactures glass.
