Yellowstone National Park is the country's oldest national park, established in 1872, and its largest outside Alaska, covering 8991 km2 (3472 sq miles) of the Rocky Mountains.
It spreads over parts of three states: northwestern Wyoming, southern Montana and eastern Idaho.

It has some 200 geysers, about 10 000 hot springs and mud pots, and spectacular alpine scenery. There are canyons and waterfalls (dropping 33 and 94 m, 109 and 308 ft) on the Yellowstone River and much wilderness country. The Old Faithful geyser erupts regularly about every 67 minutes.
