Bangladesh forms the eastern part of the ancient region of Bengal. Bangladesh literally means "The Country of Bengal". The population of Bangladesh is 142 million; its land area is 56,000 square miles (slightly bigger than Greece; smaller than Iowa).

Dhaka is the capital and largest city of Bangladesh.

Large areas of this very poor country flood annually during the monsoon rainy season, preventing economic development. A large percentage of the population is landless and forced to live on and cultivate flood-prone land. Most of Bangladesh is situated on deltas of large rivers flowing from the Himalayas: the Ganges, the Jamuna, the Brahmaputra, the Meghna that flow into the Bay of Bengal.

In Bangladesh, there is proof of civilizations dating back to 500 BC to 1000 BC. Bengal became Islamic starting in the 13th century and developed into a wealthy center of trade and industry.

TigerLarge areas of Bangladesh are covered with a swampy jungle known as the Sundarbans, home to the (Royal) Bengal Tiger and one of the largest mangrove forests in the world.

The climate of Bangladesh is tropical, with a monsoon from June to October. Floods, tropical cyclones, tornadoes, and tidal waves occur almost every year.

BangaldeshA large percentage of the export earnings of Bangladesh comes from the Garments Industry, made possible because of the very low cost labor.

Bangladesh is the third most densely populated country in the world. The prevalent religion is Islam.
