On the way to Kota Kinabalu, stop in the picturesque town of Beaufort.
Admire the contemporary Islamic architecture of Sabah's state mosque, its resplendent structure, with its majestic domes and gold inlay motifs. It has graced many a magazine cover, and is a source of pride to the locals as well as a symbol of their faith.
It was built during the reign of Sultan Idris Mursyidul Azam Shah I (1887-1916), the 28th Perak ruler. There were problems during its construction, which started in 1913. Once, two elephants belonging to Sultan Idris and Raja Chulan ran over the expensive imported Italian marble tiles. The outbreak of the First World War caused a delay in replacing the marble, and the mosque was completed only in 1917, when it was officially opened by Sultan Abdul Jalil Karamtullah Shah.

Travel is an avenue of learning that no text or classroom can teach. The world is a living classroom and you the student. We invite you to the www.travel-university.org library where you can read general interest and detail oriented articles.
