Mongolia

Mongolia is a country in central Asia without access to any sea or ocean, with Russia to the north and China to the south. It was earlier called the Mongol Empire, and was then ruled by the Manchu Qing dynasty until an independent government was formed with the Soviet Union's assistance in 1921. Mongolia has very little usable land: grasslands, mountains and the Gobi Desert. Over half of the population live in capital city Ulaanbaatar.

Mongolia's population is 2.8 million; its land area 600,000 square miles.

Mongolia's main mining resources are petroleum, coal and copper.

For the (adventurous) traveler, we point out:

  • Arkhangai region - good hiking and quite easily accessible from Ulaanbaatar
  • Huvsgul - Bitterly cold just and unpredictable weather. However, of stunning beauty. The inhabitants are the reindeer people, who live in teepees, ride reindeer, and live from their reindeer herds.
  • Ulaanbaatar - The sadly looking capital
