Cornwall

County of 3546 km2 (1369 sq miles) occupying the south-west tip of England.

Cornwall
Cornwall

It belongs to the Celtic fringe of Western Europe and has many physical and cultural similarities to Brittany in France and to Wales.

It has its own language, and true-born Cornishmen regard it as 'going up to England' to cross the River Tamar into Devon. Tin and copper mined in Cornwall were traded with the Phoenicians of the Mediterranean as long ago as the 6th century BC, and continued to be exploited under the Romans.

Today, virtually all the mines are closed, but china clay is quarried around St. Austell. The economy relies mainly on tourists attracted by the splendid beaches and spectacular coastal scenery, including LIZARD POINT and LAND'S END. Thanks to its mild climate and subtropical vegetation, the south coast is known as the Cornish Riviera, while the Isles of SCILLY have some of the mildest winters in the British Isles. The county town is Truro.
