Once a Viking trading post, now the country's second largest city and port after Copenhagen, and the capital of Jutland. It has an interesting Old Town (Den gamle By) with a collection of 17th and 18th-century buildings re-erected in an open-air museum in the botanical garden. It also has a fine cathedral, Denmark's first modern university, founded in 1934, a music academy, concert hall, and a prehistoric museum which houses the 2000-year-old 'Grauballe Man'; his remains were found preserved in the bog of Grauballe Fen, which lies 40 km (25 miles) west of Arhus, in the 1 950s. Industries include clothing factories, foodstuff and paper manufacturing.
Locals hypothesize that the legacy of Italian blood and culture in Cologne, colonized by the Romans more than 1500 years ago, makes the people more jovial and lighthearted. Cologne is the largest city on the Rhine.
Kolsch is not only the dialect spoken here but, also the name of their own top-fermented beer. There are more than 4,000 pubs, restaurant's and brewery taverns in Cologne.
