Despite Denmark's rural image, only 5 per cent of the population are engaged in farming. The overwhelming majority are town dwellers engaged in manufacturing and service activities. Many factories are small, sited in the countryside and employ fewer than 100 people, but exports from these small factories exceed those of agriculture.
In spite of its limited range of raw materials, Denmark sells a wide range of manufactured exports, thanks largely to a strong tradition of imaginative design. This is revealed, for example, in furniture and kitchenware, the silverware of Georg Jensen, and Royal Copenhagen porcelain.
Unexpected industries have sprung up in towns on the heaths of Jutland; where cottagers once made stockings for export from the wool of their sheep, their descendants may he working in one of Europe's largest shirt factories at Herning. A carpenter's workshop created the children's constructional toy called Lego, which is sold throughout the world. An important pharmaceutical industry has developed; Denmark is the world's chief exporter of insulin.
Services and ideas are also exported. Danish bridge and harbor construction, system-built factories and housing components have found wide markets, especially in the Middle East, South-east Asia, Africa and South America. Danish architects are world famous, most notably Jorn Utzon, who designed Sydney Opera House in Australia.
All this economic success is accompanied by political stability. Coalition governments, elected by a system of proportional representation, place a high value on individual liberty. Denmark is also a strong supporter of international agencies and generous in its aid to the developing world. As a member of the Nordic Council, Denmark collaborates closely in social, economic and cultural fields with its neighbors, Sweden, Norway, Iceland and Finland.
