Jigsaw of Islands

East of Jutland lies a jigsaw of islands. The second largest, FUNEN (Fyn), is linked to Jutland by bridges. Funen is called The Garden of Denmark because of its flowery villages with their pastel-painted farmhouses. To the east is the largest island, Zealand (Sjaelland), linked to Funen by a shuttle service of train and car ferries.

The capital, COPENHAGEN, is on the eastern shore of Zealand, as far away as possible from the Jutland mainland, but strategically placed on the Oresund strait between Denmark and Sweden. At the northern approach to the Oresund stands ELSINORE (Helsingor), the setting for Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. The most isolated Danish island, Bornholm, is several hours' ferry journey across the Baltic from the capital. SUCCESS IN AGRICULTURE

Denmark is an agricultural country. Three-quarters of the land is cultivated, mostly by the rotation of grass, barley, oats, sugar beet and fodder beet, but animal husbandry has been the mainstay of rural Denmark for the past century. Its best-known products are bacon and butter from 12 million pigs and 2.8 million cows. Farms are small, with the great majority ranging from 15 to 30 hectares (37.5-75 acres), and are mostly owned and worked by single families,

The success of Denmark's agriculture is due to cooperation, mechanization and knowledgeable farmers. For a century the industry has benefited from cooperative processing and marketing of farm products, purchasing of farm supplies and financing of farm needs. Denmark made mechanization cheaper by manufacturing its own tractors, harvesters and milking machines appropriate to smallholdings and limited purses; this blossomed into an important export industry in farm machinery. Farmland is regarded as an important national asset. All young farmers must study to earn a 'green license', without which they cannot own farmland. The small farmer is protected from urban investors: any property of more than 5 hectares (12 acres) must be held by someone whose principal occupation is farming. Even the development of second homes in rural areas is now strictly controlled.

Unlike many of the world's large cities, Cologne, with a population of over a million, gets better every day, there are more things to do and see, more new and innovative buildings... more
