Saumur

Saumur Castle has a proud air about it with its towers and sloping roofs, flouting the Loire from its pedestal. King René rebuilt this chateau as a «love mansion» in the 14C, adorning it with a well thought out decorative design befitting of the Gothic style. At the end of the 16C the chateau was again fortified, and today accommodates the Horse Museum and the Museum of Decorative arts.

The Place St-Pierre is flanked by half timbered 18C houses. This is the centre of old Saumur, where the busy alleyways meet streets such as the Rue Saint-Jean amongst others all imbued with medieval charm such as the Grande Rue.

The Saumur Town hall was built in the 16C and has a fortified appearance on the side facing the Loire. There is a change in the style of decoration on the courtyard side with the facade finely sculptured in the Gothic-Renaissance transitional style.

"The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page", St. Augustine said. Here at www.travel-university.org we believe that every page must be read and explored. Travel is an avenue of learning that no text or classroom can teach. The world is a living classroom and you the student. We invite you to the www.travel-university.org library where you can read general interest and detail oriented articles.
