Here under Rhône valley region, you will find information about the wines you can find in the Rhône valley.
The Rhône valley stretches for 140 miles from Lyon to Avignon and is divided into two regions: North and South.
In the North, some of the world's longest-lived wines are produced: rare and aromatic whites; tannic and massively structured reds.
2. Main article
In the South, a veritable sea of hearty everyday red is produced, but so too are the famous and high quality wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas, as well as high qualitysweet wines.
There are two great red grapes in the Northern Rhône. The Syrah which is the noble red wine grape and the Viognier with its white wines and a small proportion of some reds. Marsanne and Roussanne are also grown for white wines.
The most famous wines in the North are the Côte-Rôtie which is one of France's most exciting red wine appellations and the Hermitage which produces remarkably rich, deeply-colored, aromatic red wines made only from Syrah, and complex white wines blended from Marsanne and Roussanne.
3. References
In the Southern Rhône, a large variety of grapes is permitted. You will meet the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsaut for reds and the Grenache Blanc, Picpoul, Roussanne and Marsanne for whites. The best wines in this part of the Rhône are the Côtes du Rhône and the Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The vast majority of the first wine is red, including blends of Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache and other permitted varieties, and about 2% white with blends of Viognier, Marsanne and
Roussanne.
The second wine, the Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the most important quality appellation of Southern Rhône, producing mostly spicy, rich red wines, with a small percentage of whites. Grenache is the most important grape variety and dominates the plantings.
