Bremen
Officially named The Free and Hanseatic City of Bremen, this is one of the three states of Germany which is actually a city (Berlin and Hamburg are the other two). Along with Bavaria, Saxony, and Hamburg, Bremen is one of the German states which existed before World War II.
Aside from San Marino, it is the oldest city republic in the world.

Once part of the Hanseatic League, Bremen still remains one of Germany's most vital ports. And, like so many port cities, maritime trade dominates the city's economy.
