Region of north-west Greece covering 9203 km2 (3552 sq miles), bordering Albania and the Ionian Sea, but cutoff from the rest of the country by the Pindhos mountain range. In 278 BC, its King Pyrrhus (3 19-272 BC) won a battle against the Romans so costly in officers and men that it gave rise to the description Pyrrhic victory, a victory that might just as well have been a defeat. Turkey occupied Epirus from AD_1449 until 1912. Its chief town is Yannina.
