Region of north-west Greece covering 9203 km2 (3552 sq miles), bordering Albania and the Ionian Sea, but cutoff from the rest of the country by the Pindhos mountain range. It is a hilly region with the highest rainfall in Greece. Agriculture and pasture farming thrive in the valleys. In 278 BC, its King Pyrrhus (3 19-272 BC) won a battle against the Romans so costly in officers and men that it gave rise to the description Pyrrhic victory, a victory that might just as well have been a defeat. Turkey occupied Epirus from AD_1449 until 1912. Its chief town is Yannina.
