The seven main islands of the Ionian Sea - CORFU, CEPHALONIA, LEVKAS, ITHACA, ZAKINTHOS, KITHIRA and Paxoi. They have a mild climate, lush vegetation, sandy beaches, fishing ports and timeless villages. The islands have been settled since the Homeric age (11th-12th century BC). They were ruled in turn by the Romans, Venetians (1203-1797), French (1807-15) and British (1815-64), after which they were returned to Greece. Tourism, olive and fig production and fishing are the main activities. The Greek name for the islands, Eptanisos, comes from words meaning 'seven islands'.

Ionian Sea
Lying between southern Italy and Greece, the sea includes some of the deepest parts of the MEDITERRANEAN. It is rich in classical and mythological associations. The sea was named after Io, mistress of the god Zeus, who changed her into a white cow to conceal her from Hera, his jealous wife. Tormented by a gadfly sent by Hera, Io wandered around the shores of the sea until Zeus finally turned her back into human form. Greatest width 676 km (420 miles)
"The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page", St. Augustine said. Here at www.travel-university.org we believe that every page must be read and explored. Travel is an avenue of learning that no text or classroom can teach. The world is a living classroom and you the student. We invite you to the www.travel-university.org library where you can read general interest and detail oriented articles.
