LAND OF LEGENDARY BEAUTY AND OLD GLORIES, STRUGGLING TO MAKE ITS WAY/N THE MODERN WORLD

A 17th-century travel writer said of Greece: 'The mind is fascinated, the body faints, the eyes become moist and are delighted. It is a legendary country, which attracts lyrical prose. It has great natural beauty, a rich architectural heritage in monuments, which are famous throughout the world, and priceless art treasures.

Some 2500 years ago, Greece was the centre of the Western world, where European civilization and the concept of democratic government were born. Today, Greece is suffering economic hardship, and its famous ruins symbolize the 20th-century poverty of a once-great nation.

In between, Greece has had a tumultuous history, It flourished even under the Roman Empire, which ruled Greece from 146 BC, and even more In the Byzantine period from AD 330. But in 1460, seven years after the fall of Constantinople to the Turks, Greece became a Turkish province and remained under Turkish rule for nearly 400 years - a period that has coloured Greek politics and foreign affairs to this day. After an eight-year war (1821-9), Greece became an independent kingdom, but its present frontiers were not stabilized until after the Second World War.
