One of the CYCLADES - an arid, volcanic island with hot springs. It was in the sea near the ruined 700 BC city of Melos that the ancient Greek sculpture known as the Venus de Milo was found in 1820. The statue is now in the Louvre museum, Paris. The island's main port is Adhamas, 4 km (2 miles) from the biggest town, Plaka, which has a 13th-century church and a Venetian castle. Near old Milos is a small, hillside Roman theatre.
