Excavated, fortified city of Homer's King Agamemnon on a hill 30 km (18 miles) south-west of Corinth in the Peloponnese. Mycenae was occupied from 1580 to 1100 BC, when it was destroyed by the invading Dorians, and was the heart of a rich trading kingdom known as the Mycenaean civilization after the site. It was excavated from I 874 by the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann, who uncovered a palace, temples, a citadel and the remarkable royal chamber tombs containing gold death masks. The largest is named the Tomb of Agamemnon, though it was almost certainly of an earlier date than 1200 BC, when he is believed to have ruled. Many of the finds are now in the Athens museum.
