Harbor town l70 km (106 miles) west of Athens on the north side of the Gulf of Corinth overlooking the straits where in l571 a combined Spanish and Venetian fleet under John of Austria routed the Turkish navy in the last sea battle fought by oared galleys. Miguel Cervantes, the Spanish author of Don Quixote, fought at this Battle of Lepanto. The town is now a tourist centre with a sports and arts festival each July.
