Largest of the CYCLADES islands, in the south Aegean Sea. Naxos is still largely underdeveloped, with fertile soil, a hilly interior and sandy beaches. Greek mythology says the hero Theseus, slayer of the Minotaur, abandoned Ariadne, a Cretan Princess, there, indicating that it may have been an outpost of the Minoan Empire of Crete. From AD 1207 to 1344 it was the seat of a Venetian duchy. It has a 13th-century cathedral, a French convent and a museum, Red and white wine are produced, as are honey, olive oil, fruits, figs and Pomegranates.
