Volcanic island among the northernmost of the DODECANESE, in the eastern Aegean Sea. St. John the Evangelist was exiled there in AD 8 1-96. during which time he wrote the Book of Revelation. The battlement-walled monastery of St. John, standing on a crag over the town, was founded in AD 1088, and has some richly carved icons and medieval frescoes. In the Convent of the Apocalypse is the cave where St. John is reputed to have written the Book or Revelation.
