Largest city in the PELOPONNESE, on the north-west coast facing the Ionian Sea and the main gateway to Greece from the west. It was founded in 1100 BC. Under Roman. then Venetian, domination it grew into a busy Mediterranean port. Patras is now an industrial centre, processing textiles, leather and olive oil, and exporting wine and currants. It has a university. At the church of Ayios Andreas is a reliquary said to contain the skull of St. Andrew, patron saint of both Greece and Scotland.
