Harbor town on Navarino Bay, on the south-west coast of the Peloponnese. In AD 1827 at the naval battle of Navarino, a combined French, English and Russian fleet defeated the Turks. The remains of 58 vessels sunk during the battle can be seen in calm weather under the water. Nearby, parts of the palace of the Homeric King Nestor have been excavated.
