Mountainous backbone of Greece, a massive range extending from Albania in the north and falling away into the Gulf of Corinth. Its peaks include Smolikas (2637 m, 8651 ft), Grammos (2503 m, 8210 ft), Giona (2510 m, 8235 ft) and the sacred Parnassus (2457 m, 8061 ft) with its twin summits, one dedicated to Apollo, the other to Bacchus. The range is mainly limestone with a gently rolling plateau, and has a pass - at the village of Metsovon near Katara. Deep ravines are clothed in forests of beech, oak, chestnut and fir. Five major rivers of Greece rise in the range: the AKHELOOS, the Arakhthos and the Aoos, which drain into the Ionian Sea; and the Aliakmon and Pinios, which empty into the Aegean Sea.
"The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page", St. Augustine said. Here at www.travel-university.org we believe that every page must be read and explored. Travel is an avenue of learning that no text or classroom can teach. The world is a living classroom and you the student. We invite you to the www.travel-university.org library where you can read general interest and detail oriented articles.
