The country's second largest city after Athens, and Macedonia's chief port, lying on the Thermaic Gulf. It is a university town, a NATO base and a major industrial centre with oil refineries, engineering and textile plants. The city was founded in 315 BC. Little remains of the original buildings, but Roman ruins - the arch and palace of the 4th-century Roman emperor Galerius - and Byzantine ramparts are still visible, and there is an archaeological museum containing some of the treasures of ancient Macedonia, including most of the finds from the tomb of King Philip (383-336 BC) at Vergina. The city stages an International Trade Fair each September.
Locals hypothesize that the legacy of Italian blood and culture in Cologne, colonized by the Romans more than 1500 years ago, makes the people more jovial and lighthearted. Cologne is the largest city on the Rhine.
